Cameron Smith Prevails in Stroke Play Championship
Saturday, 01 May 2010 09:27

Former Wantima and now Royal Queensland member Cameron Smith has won the 2010 Queensland Men's Stroke Play Championship on the eighth play-off hole against Sydney's Brett Drewitt at Headland Golf Club. With the play-off suspended after six holes due to fading light yesterday, the players recommenced their battle at 7.30am this morning at Headland's first tee.

Cameron Smith plays a recovery shot just short of the 15th green in the final round

This morning's action didn't feature the drama of the previous evening's.  Drewitt surrendered his challenge with a three-putt bogey on the Par 5 2nd hole, and Smith secured his par and the Stroke Play title.

Following a remarkable day's golf yesterday at Headland, Smith and Dewitt had finished the Championship tied on 12-under par (276). Both had failed to assert themselves in the afternoon's final round in carding 2-over par scores of 74 in contrast to their three previous excellent rounds.

Six playoff holes, including one played under floodlights on Headland's par-3 18th hole, failed to find a winner and pushed the contest into a fourth day.

The Men's Stroke Play Championship is the first in what promises to be many Senior Men's titles for the extremely promising 16-year Smith, who has won the last two Queensland Boy's Amateur titles. He was also the defeated finalist at the 2009 Queensland Men's Amateur, having fought an epic contest with eventual winner Daniel Nisbet.

Earlier this year Smith represented Australia in the Trans-Tasman Cup series against New Zealand. Smith has also been selected to travel to Scottsdale, Arizona for the Thunderbird International following his recent results and Australian ranking.

The top 16 available qualifiers from the Queensland Men's Stroke Play Championship will move onto the Queensland Men's Amateur Championship match play, which starts at Bribie's Pacific Harbour Golf & Country Club on Tuesday 4 May.
